OTITIS MEDIA



Otitis Media
  • an inflammatory disorder usually caused by an infection of the middle ear occurring as a result of a blocked Eustachian tube, which prevents normal drainage.
  • a common complication of an acute respiratory infection.
"Infants and children are more prone to otitis media"
Rationale: Infant and children has shorter, wider and straighter Eustachian tube



ASSESSMENT:
  1. fever
  2. irritability and restlessness
  3. loss of appetite
  4. rolling of head from side to side
  5. pulling on or rubbing the ear
  6. earache or pain
  7. signs of hearing loss
  8. purulent ear drainage
"ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION"
  • In a child younger than age 3, pull the lobe down and back.
  • In a child older than 3 years old, pull the pinna up and back.
